BRYAN, Texas –– The New Mexico men’s golf team saw its season come to an end Tuesday as play concluded at the NCAA Bryan Regional. Due to the forecast of inclement weather, the second and third rounds were played on Tuesday, as the Lobos climbed up from 13th place to 11th place during the final two rounds. New Mexico shot even par in the second round and 2-under in the final round, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a 13-over first round as UNM finished at 11-over.
Texas won the regional with a 45-under total. Texas A&M (40-under), Chattanooga (23-under), North Carolina (19-under) and Tennessee (18-under) rounded out the top five that also advanced to the NCAA Championships.
Johnnie Clark was the Lobos’ top finisher, ending T-26th at 2-under. He posted an even par second round and a 3-under final round. Wyatt Provence finished at 6-over after shooting 2-under in the second round and 4-over in the final round. Thayer Plewe shot even par in the final round to end the tournament at 7-over. Mesa Falleur also finished at 7-over after back-to-back rounds of even par on Tuesday. Emil Albers ended the tournament at 8-over.
“It is devastating to lose in the way we did, but we just didn’t have it all week,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “It is frustrating and disappointing, a lot of emotions go through you, but at the end, like I told the guys, I am proud of them. We had a great season. That’s why we treat this week the way we do, because anything can happen. We saw a No. 11 seed get through. Usually someone in the top five falls out, and unfortunately this week it was us. Today doesn’t change the fact that we had multiple team wins and four individual wins. We have to leave with our heads held high, but also take this feeling and let it sink in so this doesn’t happen again.”
The Lobos, who entered the postseason ranked No. 21 nationally, won two events and had four individual winners this season.
