MARANA, Ariz. — Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) fired a 6-under-par 66 in Tuesday’s second round to move into a tie for 14th at the NCAA Marana Regional. Takis moved up 18 places on the individual leaderboard with his 66 on the par-72, 7,317-yard The Gallery Golf Club and is tied for 14th at 5-under 139 through 36 holes.

The 66 for Takis, the fourth-ranked player in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings and the Mountain West Golfer of the Year, was the fourth-lowest round out of the 75 golfers in Tuesday’s second round, where the average score was 71.41. Starting on the back-nine, Takis birdied his first two holes and the par-5, 550-yard 16th to make the turn at 3-under. Takis then birdied the par-4, 399-yard first and par-4, 422-yard second, along with the par-4, 434-yard fifth and the par-5, 553-yard sixth to reach 7-under for the round. After consecutive pars, Takis bogeyed the par-5, 678-yard ninth to settle for a 66. It was the 16th round in the 60s this season for Takis out of his 29 rounds so far.

Senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy), meanwhile, carded a 4-over 76 to drop into a tie for 39th at +2. Kowack had two birdies in his round, which were offset by four bogeys and a double bogey on the second (his 11th hole).

Junior Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) bettered his opening round 77 yesterday with a 2-over 74 today and is tied for 62nd at +7. Sampson logged three birdies, a bogey and two double bogeys.

Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) was six shots better than the first round with a 1-over 73 on Tuesday. Hirayama made the turn at 2-under with three birdies and a bogey on his front nine (holes 10-through-18), but had one birdie on his back nine with four bogeys.

Freshman Beah Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) shot an 83 in his NCAA Regional debut with his lone birdie coming on No. 16.

Oklahoma State’s Eric Lee and Alabama’s William Jennings lead the field at -12, two shots ahead of Arizona’s Filip Jakubcik (-10).

San Diego State dropped one place to 13th in the 14-team field after a 1-over 289 and sit at 12-over 588 through two rounds. No. 18 Arizona blitzed the field with a 24-under 264 on one of its home courses and lead at -35. No. 5 Oklahoma State (-25), No. 44 Arkansas State (-21), No. 8 LSU (-18), No. 29 Duke (-14), No. 20 Alabama (-12) and No. 33 Clemson (-7) are also under-par for the tournament. The top-5 will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 29-June 3, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, along with the top individual on the non-advancing team.

The Aztecs will tee off in their final round at 8:55 a.m. PT Wednesday from the first hole.
