CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Led by a tournament-record score of 16-under-par 200 by senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands), the San Diego State men’s golf team captured the 2025 R.E. Lamkin Invitational on damp and windy Tuesday in nearby Chula Vista.

The Aztecs, who are 25th in the latest Scoreboard national rankings, released Wednesday, shot a 20-under 268 in today’s final around on the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club and finished at -43 for the tournament, 16 strokes ahead of co-runner-ups No. 33 Colorado (-27) and No. 35 San Diego (-27).

SDSU, which entered the final round one shot ahead of co-host USD and two shots clear of Colorado, blitzed the 16-team field on Tuesday, posting a 268, the best round by eight strokes over eventual fourth-place finisher No. 22 Brigham Young (-18) as only two other schools shot below par in Colorado (-6) and San Diego (-5).

It was the first regular-season team title for the three-time defending Mountain West champions since winning the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in April 2023 and San Diego State’s first Lamkin Invitational win since 2013. The Aztecs were one shot short of tying Oklahoma State’s Lamkin Invite-record score of 44-under par, set in 2018.

Hastings continued his impressive spring, earning medalist honors with his second straight 66 to finish at 16-under 200, breaking Fredrik Nilehan’s previous record of -15 set in 2018. It was the third collegiate title for Hastings, tied for the ninth most in SDSU history, and fourth consecutive collegiate top-10 finish. He had seven birdies on the day with his lone bogey coming on the par-3, 158-yard 11th hole. He birdied 20 of the 54 holes for the tournament.

In January, Hastings captured the Latin American Amateur Championship, receiving an invitation to compete in the 2025 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club and exemptions into The Open and the U.S. Open. He has played in two PGA TOUR events this spring, tying for 13th at the Mexico Open at VidantaWorld, Feb. 20-23, at 13-under-par 271 and missing the cut just this past weekend at the Puerto Rico Open after being at 2-under 142 through 36 holes. Hastings is ranked 11th in the latest PGA TOUR University rankings and 23th in the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).

Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia), meanwhile, tied for second at 12-under 204 following a 3-under 69 today, which came with three birdies and no bogeys. It was the best collegiate finish of his career and his best 54-hole score.

Competing as an individual and not counting for the Aztecs’ team score, senior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steel Canyon HS) came in a tie for sixth at 9-under 207 following a 71 today for his lowest 54-hole score of the season. He had three birdies and two bogeys on Tuesday.

Junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for ninth at -8 with a 69 in today’s final round. He had five birdies and two bogeys on the day.

Three golfers tied for 21st at 3-under 213, led by sophomore Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS), who fired a 7-under 65 in today’s final round. It was the best round of the day and easily his lowest round of the season (previous best was a 71). He had seven birdies on the day without recording a bogey, moving up 42 spots on the leaderboard.

Competing as individuals, senior Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) and sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) tied Oyama and others for 21st at -3 with Townsend shooting a 68 today and Sampson a 74. Townsend, who opened with a 74 and 71 yesterday, notched four birdies in his bogey-free round today. Sampson had two birdies, where were offset by four bogeys after opening 70-69 on Monday.

Senior Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) slipped to a tie for 45th as an individual at 2-over 218 after a 76 today, while junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) moved up 28 spots to a tie for 50th with a 68 today and +3 for the tournament. Kowack eagled the par-5, 563-yard eighth today, and had three birdies with just one bogey.

Senior Rugthai Thongsom (Surat Thani, Thailand) tied for 65th at +6 after an 80 today, while sophomore Phillip Kench (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) came in 86th at +13 and a 78 on Tuesday.

Next up for the Aztecs will be The Pauma Invitational, March 17-18, in Pauma Valley, California.
