COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State senior Tyler Kowack has been tabbed the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Month for October/November, while New Mexico’s Thayer Plewe has been selected as the MW Freshman of the Month.
The monthly honor is the second for Kowack and the first since earning the MW freshman award in September 2022. Plewe is being recognized for the first time in his career.
GOLFER OF THE MONTH
TYLER KOWACK, SAN DIEGO STATE
Senior, San Diego, California/Canyon Crest Academy
• Won the Marquette Intercollegiate in his only action in October, shooting a 2-under-par 214 (75-70-69) to top the 90-man field.
• Was one of just two players to finish under par, as he drained a 7-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win by a stroke.
• Birdied four of his final 11 holes and tied for first in the tournament with 14 birdies overall.
• Led San Diego State to a runner-up team finish, ahead of No. 10 Florida and No. 16 Texas A&M, who tied for third, three strokes back of the Aztecs.
FRESHMAN OF THE MONTH
THAYER PLEWE, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Cortez, Colorado/Montezuma-Cortez HS
• Won all three of his matches at the NB3 Matchplay at Twin Warriors and tied for 13th at The Clerico.
• Beat players from UNLV, Oregon and New Mexico State to help the Lobos finish second at the NB3 Matchplay.
• Tied for low honors for New Mexico at The Clerico, shooting a 7-over 217 at Southern Hills in Tulsa, a course that has hosted nine major championships.
• Helped UNM to a fourth-place finish at The Clerico, which featured eight teams ranked in the top 50 nationally.
