ST. GEORGE, Utah — Utah State freshman golfer Ashton McArthur posted a 7-under-par 137 (68-69) to win the 2024 Sand Hollow Resort Amateur here on Saturday.
McArthur, a freshman from Rexburg, Idaho, shot a 4-under 68 during his first round on Friday and followed that up with a 3-under 69 during his final 18 holes on Saturday to post the three-shot victory.
McArthur began the tournament by carding a 1-over 37 during his first nine holes of the tournament, but bounced back with a 5-under 31 as he had three birdies and an eagle on the back nine. On Saturday, he posted a bogey-free 3-under 33 on the front nine and shot an even-par 36 on the back nine with one birdie and one bogey.
McArthur’s eight birdies during the tournament were tied for the sixth-most in the field, while his 24 pars tied for the fourth-most. He also carded just three bogeys over 36 holes, which were tied for the second fewest.
Utah State had two more golfers compete in the tournament as senior Josh Pehrson placed sixth win a 1-over 145 (71-74) and fellow senior John Cook tied for ninth with a 5-over 149 (79-70).
Utah State will begin its spring competition season on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 20-21, when it travels to Palm Springs, California, to compete in the Wyoming-hosted Match Play Tournament.
