COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico senior Matthew Watkins has been tabbed the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Month for September, while Utah State’s Ashton McArthur has been selected as the MW Freshman of the Month.

The monthly honors are the first for both athletes.

GOLFER OF THE MONTH
MATTHEW WATKINS, NEW MEXICO
Senior, Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall HS

  • Averaged 68.33 strokes over nine rounds in the month, with all nine rounds under par.
  • Posted three top-10 finishes in as many outings, helping New Mexico to top-10 team finishes in all three events.
  • Finished sixth at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Arizona, turning in a 14-under-par 199 (68-66-65) to become just the seventh Lobo in program history to finish under 200. His final-round 65 matched his career-low round.
  • Tied for fifth at the USF Intercollegiate in San Francisco, California, with an 8-under 208 (70-69-69).
  • Helped New Mexico win its home tournament, the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, for the first time since 2019 by shooting an 8-under 208 (70-71-67).

FRESHMAN OF THE MONTH
ASHTON McARTHUR, UTAH STATE
Freshman, Rexburg, Idaho / Madison HS

  • Averaged 70.5 strokes over six rounds, with five of those rounds at par or better.
  • Opened his collegiate career with a 3-over-par 219 at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado, shooting rounds of 75, 72 and 72 to tie for 35th.
  • Opened with a 5-under 66 at the Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno, California, and followed that with a 4-under 67 for a total of 9-under 133, which is tied for the third-lowest opening 36-hole mark in program history.
  • Closed the event with an even-par 71 to finish with a 9-under 294, tying for ninth in the tournament and matching the sixth-lowest 54-hole score in program history.
  • Helped the Aggies to a sixth-place team finish at 10-under 842, tied for the sixth-lowest score in relation to par in program history.
