MARANA, Ariz. — Senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) carded a 2-under-par 70 to pace the San Diego State men’s golf team on the first day of the NCAA Marana Regional Monday in Marana, Arizona.
Kowack, who last week was named to his third consecutive all-Mountain West team, sits in a tie for 15th out of 75 golfers on the par-72, 7,317-yard The Gallery Golf Club after the first round. After bogeying the par-4, 422-yard second hole, Kowack sank three birdies the rest of the way without a bogey for his 70. He’s the only Aztec under par.
Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia), meanwhile, shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for 32nd. Takis, the fourth-ranked player in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings who was chosen as the MW Golfer of the Year last week, had four birdies and five bogeys in the round.
Junior Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) carded a 5-over 77 and is in a tie for 57th. Sampson was 6-over through 10 holes but regrouped with seven straight pars before birdieing the par-4, 435-yard 18th.
Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) birdied the final two holes for a 79 and is tied for 70th, while redshirt junior Dylan Oyama’s (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) 82 is 74th.
Arkansas State’s Cole Kirby and Duke’s William Love share the individual lead after matching 65s, two shots ahead of Arizona’s Filip Jakubcik, Alabama’s William Jennings and Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout, each who are at -5.
San Diego State, which entered as the No. 7 seed in the region and ranked 41st nationally, is in 12th place in the 14-team field at 11-over 299, two shots back of Florida Gulf Coast (+9). No. 5 Oklahoma State, and tournament host and No. 18 Arizona lead at -11, while No. 8 LSU (-9), No. 44 Arkansas State (-7) and No. 29 Duke (-6) round out the top 5.
SDSU’s second round of the three-day tournament begins at 7:55 a.m. PT Tuesday.
