RENO — No. 4 New Mexico defeated No. 5 Fresno State 7–2 in the opening game of the 2026 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Softball Championship on Wednesday. This victory marks UNM’s first Conference tournament win since the 2005 championship.

The Lobos, which made their first appearance in the MW tournament since the event was brought back in 2023, hit three home runs to secure the win and advance to face No. 1 Grand Canyon on Thursday.

New Mexico’s Ella Dawson made a significant impact as a pinch hitter, delivering a home run and driving in two runs. Her performance added a crucial element to the team’s offensive efforts. Allie Williams also excelled, recording two runs, two hits and two RBIs, including a home run, showcasing her ability to contribute both in scoring and driving in runs. Jessica Deleon matched this offensive output with two RBIs and a home run, making her presence felt in the lineup as well. On the mound, Caitlin Benningfield provided solid relief, pitching 2 1/3 innings without allowing any earned runs and earning a save. These Lobos were pivotal in the team’s recent performance, contributing both offensively and defensively.

The Bulldogs’ standout performers include Kealani Nitta, who made a significant impact with a double and a run scored, showcasing her ability to contribute offensively. Jamie Hicks also delivered at the plate, collecting two hits in her appearance. Rylee Bocchini was effective as well, contributing one hit and one RBI to the team’s efforts. On the mound, Lauryn Carranco pitched five innings, striking out three, although she allowed six earned runs.

The Lobos will take on the Lopes tomorrow at 3 p.m. PT. The Lopes are the Mountain West regular-season champions and are nationally ranked 21 in the NFCA rankings.
