LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV softball freshman pitcher Yanina Sherwood has been named to the Softball America Freshman Watch List the organization announced today.

The Mill Creek, Washington native is only one of three Mountain West players named to the watch list of 170 freshmen.

Sherwood, a 5-foot-11 right-handed pitcher, was the 2024 Washington Gatorade Player of the year after leading Henry M. Jackson HS to back-to-back State Championship titles. She was also named the 2024 All-Class State Player of the Year and The Herald 2024 Player of the Year. Sherwood is a three-time 4A All-Wesco first team selection, a three-time 4A All-Area first teamer and a three-time Henry M. Jackson HS MVP. In 2023, Sherwood was named the 2023 Evertt Herald Softball All-Area Player of the Year and the 2023 SBLive National Player of the Year. During her senior campaign, she posted a 25-2 mark with a 0.50 ERA through 167 innings of work and struck out 273 batters. At the plate in 2024, Sherwood batted a .392 with 10 home runs and 35 RBI. Outside of her high school career, she played club ball for the ai Bandits Breer and was domiant for them in the circle, guiding the Bandits to a 2023 Triple Crown World Series Championship. She also has national team experience with the Peruvian National Team and played in the U18 Women’s World Cup in Lima, Peru.

The Rebels kick off the 2025 campaign hosting the UNLV Desert Classic at Eller Media Stadium on Feb. 7-9 and will play Buffalo, Oregon and Southern Utah. UNLV will face Buffalo first in the season-opener on Friday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. followed by a game against Southern Utah at 6 p.m. The Scarlet & Gray will play two games on Saturday, Feb. 8, first against Oregon and 3 p.m. and then Buffalo at 6 p.m. The Rebels will close out the UNLV Desert Classic on Sunday, Feb. 9 against Southern Utah at 12 p.m.

Tickets are on sale now for the 2025 UNLV softball season. Season tickets are $50 for adults, $40 for seniors, faculty and staff, and alumni. Tournament passes for both the UNLV Desert Classic and UNLV Rebel Classic are $25 for adults and $20 for seniors, faculty and staff. Single-day tournament tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors, faculty and staff.
