MESA, Ariz. — No. 2 seed Washington State (30-26, 15-9 MW) run-ruled San Diego State (36-24, 16-8 MW), 14–4, to earn its first-ever Mountain West baseball tournament title and the Cougars first conference championship since 1995.
San Diego State won the first game on Sunday, forcing a winner-take-all second game.
Sunday marked the first MW championship game to end in a 10-run rule since 2016.
In the deciding game, the Cougars, who secured the MW’s automatic bid into the NCAA regionals with the victory, were propelled by a seven-run seventh inning, highlighted by five hits and a home run, on their way to the 2026 Credit Union 1 MW Baseball Championship crown.
Washington State was led throughout the week by second baseman Gavin Roy, who was named MW Tournament Most Valuable Player. Roy had eight hits, seven RBIs and scored six runs over the Cougars four games at Sloan Park.
The Cougars and Aztecs were tied, 3-3, after three innings before SDSU’s Max Farrell scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up by a run. WSU was quick to answer back, scoring three in the top of the fifth as Dustin Robinson and Ryan Skjonsby hit back-to-back doubles to go up 6-4. Washington State scored one run in the sixth before the seventh-inning outburst.
Robinson recorded two doubles on the day, tying a Mountain West tournament championship game record.
The Cougars used three pitchers in the final game, including Scott Rienguette, who earned the win after pitching 3.2 innings, striking out six batters and only allowing one hit.
Washington State will return to the NCAA regionals for the first time since 2010.
