RENO — Top-seeded Grand Canyon defeated No. 4 New Mexico by a score of 7-6 in Thursday’s first game of the day at the 2026 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Softball Championship. This victory marked GCU’s first win in program history at the MW softball championship.
GCU entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 6-2, having just allowed four runs in the top half of the inning to the Lobos. The Lops began the comeback with a 1-out single to center field by Jada Cooper, who brought home two runs. GCU then rattled off three consecutive doubles to mount a five-run inning, including a walk-off double to left center field by Addison Shifflett.
Grand Canyon, which entered the tournament ranked No. 21 nationally, will face the winner of the Thursday night game between No. 2 UNLV and No. 3 Nevada, while the Lobos will face the losing team.
Trinity Martin made a significant impact for the Lopes, crossing the plate twice and hitting a home run, showcasing her ability to contribute both on the basepaths and with power at the plate. Cooper also played a crucial role, driving in two runs with her two hits, highlighting her efficiency in run production. Emily Gonzalez added to the offensive effort with three RBIs and a double. On the mound, Oakley Vickers delivered a standout performance, pitching 6.1 innings and striking out ten batters, demonstrating her effectiveness and control in the circle.
New Mexico was led by Jessica Deleon, who hit a grand slam to put the Lobos ahead 6-2, and DeNae Vasquez-Dickson, who had a team high two hits and scored two runs.
