BOISE, Idaho – Boise State hit four home runs and outlasted Utah 10-7, Saturday at the Blue Collar Classic.
Two of the long balls came off the bat of Makenzie Butt, who finished 3-for-4 with four RBI. Brooklynn Pettis and Sydney Groves also homered as the 3-4-5 hitters combined for six hits, eight RBI and six runs.
“We keep finding ways to win ballgames and that is a sign of a good team,” Justin Shults said. “It was a great three days in front of our home crowd.”
After spotting Utah (7-17) a run in the top of the first, the Broncos answered in the bottom of the frame on a two-home run by Butt and a solo blast by Groves.
The Utes tied the game 3-3 in the second and Boise State (18-5) responded with a five-run inning.
Chloe Hughes drew a leadoff walk and Quinn Southerland beat out a bunt for a single. Sophia Knight drove in Hughes with a single for a 4-3 lead.
One out later, Butt singled to plate Southerland. Pettis followed with a laser the opposite way for a three-run home run and an 8-3 advantage.
The Utes tallied a run in the third and a three-run fourth cut their deficit to 8-7. In the bottom of the fourth, Boise State extended its lead on a home run by Butt and Hollie Farmer’s bases loaded hit by pitch.
