COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – UNLV sophomore Ilia Snitari has been named the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the third time this season, while Boise State swept the remaining honors with Zdena Safarova named MW Women’s Player of the Week, and Filip Soderqvist and Carla Grignac earning the MW Men’s and Women’s Freshman of the Week honors, respectively.

Safarova earns her third player of the week nod this year, Soderqvist picks up his third freshman award and Grignac collects a third weekly honor after she was named player and freshman of the week earlier this season.

MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ILIA SNITARI, UNLV
Sophomore, Kishinev, Moldova/Gloria Sports Theoretical Lyceum Moldova State University

  • Won both of his singles matches at the No. 1 spot to help UNLV to MW victories over Air Force and New Mexico.
  • Recorded a straight-sets win (6-2, 6-0) at New Mexico, marking the first time the Lobos have lost at No. 1 singles in four seasons, snapping a 30-match win streak at that position.
  • Also defeated Air Force’s No. 1 singles player in straight sets.

MEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
FILIP SODERQVIST, BOISE STATE
Norrtalje, Sweden

  • Went 2-0 in singles and doubles play against No. 67 Utah State.
  • Playing at the No. 5 position, was the only Bronco to record a singles victory against the regular-season champion Aggies.
  • Clinched the doubles point for the Broncos at the No. 2 position with Stewart Aronson, earning a 6-4 win.

WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ZDENA SAFAROVA, BOISE STATE
Junior, Prague, Czech Republic/University of Oklahoma

  • Finished the weekend 4-0 across No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to lead Boise State to MW wins over Air Force and New Mexico.
  • Clinched the 4-3 team victory against Air Force by rallying from a set down to win 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 at the top singles flight.
  • Earned a straight-sets win at No. 1 singles against New Mexico.
  • Added two doubles victories at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-3 against the Falcons and 6-1 against the Lobos.

WOMEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
CARLA GRIGNAC, BOISE STATE
Dakar, Senegal/CNED France

  • Went 3-1 overall in singles and doubles play to help Boise State secure a pair of MW victories.
  • Recorded a pair of straight-set wins at the No. 6 singles position, surrendering only eight total games across both matches against the Lobos (6-2, 6-4) and Falcons (6-1, 6-1).
  • Contributed a win at No. 3 doubles to help secure the team victory against New Mexico.
