COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the second straight week, Utah State swept the men’s tennis awards with sophomore Xavier Calvelo earning the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week honor and first-year Aggie Jakub Medved picking up his second consecutive and third overall MW Men’s Freshman of the Week nod.
On the women’s side, UNLV’s Veronika Kliuch was selected as the MW Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and Wyoming’s Silver Bijlsma was named the MW Women’s Freshman of the Week, marking the second weekly honors for Kliuch and Bijlsma this year.
MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
XAVIER CALVELO, UTAH STATE
Sophomore, Las Vegas, Nevada/Odyssey Charter School/SMU
- Went 4-0 across singles and doubles to lead Utah State to a pair of Conference road sweeps at New Mexico and Air Force.
- Clinched the team victory against New Mexico with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.
- Alongside freshman Jakub Medved, clinched the doubles point against the Lobos with a 7-6 (3) win at the top spot in the lineup.
- Added another straight-sets victory (6-3, 6-3) at No. 2 singles against Air Force and earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles to help secure the doubles point against the Falcons.
MEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
JAKUB MEDVED, UTAH STATE
Banská Bystrica, Slovakia/Sport’s Gymnasium
- Went unbeaten in singles and doubles play to help the Aggies to a pair of 4-0 MW road sweeps over New Mexico and Air Force.
- Clinched the team win against Air Force with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory and recorded a straight-set win (6-1, 6-0) against New Mexico at the No. 5 singles position.
- Playing with Xavier Calvelo at No. 1 doubles, clinched the doubles point against New Mexico and took down the Falcons’ top pair.
WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
VERONIKA KLIUCH, UNLV
Sophomore, Lviv, Ukraine/Optima School
- Went a combined 3-1 in singles and doubles to lead UNLV to a pair of MW road wins and extend the Rebels’ winning streak to 10 matches.
- Won both of her singles matches at the No. 1 flight against the top players from Utah State and Boise State.
- Rallied to defeat the Broncos’ top player and two-time Player of the Week Zdena Safarova — who entered the match on an eight-match winning streak— with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.
- Playing at No. 2 doubles with Eszter Kis-Czako, clinched the team doubles point against the Broncos with a 7-6 tiebreak win.
WOMEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
SILVER BIJLSMA, WYOMING
The Hague, Netherlands
- Finished the weekend 4-0 across singles and doubles play to help Wyoming to a pair of 4-0 Conference sweeps over Fresno State and San José State.
- Recorded a pair of straight-set wins at the No. 2 singles position against the Bulldogs and Spartans.
- Competed at the No. 1 doubles flight in both matches, earning a 6-1 win against Fresno State and a 6-2 win against the Spartans.
