COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Utah State sophomore Roman Venger has been named the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while the Aggies’ Jakub Medved earns MW Men’s Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season.

On the women’s side, Boise State’s Zdena Safarova was selected as the MW Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and UNLV’s Eszter Kis-Czako picked up her second MW Women’s Freshman of the Week honor this year.

MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ROMAN VENGER, UTAH STATE
Sophomore, Lviv, Ukraine/Lyceum Angstrem

  • Went 3-0 across singles and doubles to lead Utah State to a pair of 4-0 Conference sweeps over No. 61 UNLV and Nevada to open Mountain West play.
  • Clinched the team victory in both matches, recording straight-sets wins at No. 3 singles.
  • Earned a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles alongside Eliot Nobel against UNLV to help secure the doubles point.

MEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
JAKUB MEDVED, UTAH STATE
Banská Bystrica, Slovakia/Sport’s Gymnasium

  • Recorded a pair of wins on the weekend to help the Aggies begin Mountain West play 2-0 with sweeps over No. 61 UNLV and Nevada.
  • Playing at No. 1 doubles alongside Xavier Calvelo, helped clinch the doubles point against Nevada with a 6-2 win.
  • Was the first Aggie to finish in singles play against Nevada, contributing a 6-4, 6-3 straight-sets win at the No. 5 position.

WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ZDENA SAFAROVA, BOISE STATE
Junior, Prague, Czech Republic/ Oklahoma

  • Led Boise State to a pair of Mountain West wins over No. 63 Grand Canyon and No. 31 San Diego State with a 3-1 record on the week.
  • Playing at No. 1 singles in both matches, took down Grand Canyon’s No. 1, Bella Crossman, and San Diego State’s top singles player, Jo-Yee Chan, in straight sets.
  • Rallied from a 3-1 deficit in No. 1 doubles against Grand Canyon to win the tiebreak 7-4, clinching the doubles point for the Broncos.

WOMEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
ESZTER KIS-CZAKO, UNLV
Kiskunfelegyhaza, Hungary/Mora Ference Gymnasium

  • Went a combined 3-0 over the weekend to help UNLV to a pair of 4-0 shutouts against Colorado State and Wyoming in Conference play.
  • Recorded a straight-sets victory at the No. 4 position against Colorado State.
  • Clinched the doubles point against Wyoming with a 7-5 win at the No. 2 spot alongside Veronika Kliuch.
