COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State junior Avery Tallakson has been named the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while UNLV’s Marko Maksimovic earns Men’s Freshman of the Week honors for the fourth time this season.
On the women’s side, Boise State’s Zdena Safarova is the MW Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and Grand Canyon’s Hams Metwally was selected as the MW Women’s Freshman of the Week.
MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
AVERY TALLAKSON, BOISE STATE
Junior, Irvine, California/New Mexico
- Went 5-1 across his No. 1 singles and doubles matches, helping Boise State to a 3-1 record on the week with wins over No. 72 Cal Poly, Montana State and DePaul.
- Defeated No. 38 Santa Clara’s Alexander Eriksson at No. 1 singles in three sets and earned a No. 1 doubles win over Santa Clara’s No. 27-ranked pair.
- Added a straight-set win at No. 1 singles against DePaul and No. 1 doubles wins again Cal Poly and Montana State.
MEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
MARKO MAKSIMOVIC, UNLV
Belgrade, Serbia/E-Gimnazija
- Went 2-0 at No. 2 singles and doubles in UNLV’s 4-0 win over Gonzaga.
- Recorded a 6-4, 6-2 straight-sets win at No. 2 singles.
- Clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak victory.
WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ZDENA SAFAROVA, BOISE STATE
Junior, Prague, Czech Republic/ Oklahoma
- Went unbeaten at No. 1 singles and doubles to lead Boise State to a pair of Conference wins over Wyoming and Colorado State.
- Earned straight-set singles wins over Colorado State and Wyoming’s No. 1s.
- Took down the Cowgirls’ No. 1 doubles squad 7-6 (8-6) to clinch the doubles point in a 4-3 win over Wyoming.
WOMEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
HAMS METWALLY, GRAND CANYON
Alexandria, Egypt
- Went a combined 4-0 across No. 2 singles and doubles to help Grand Canyon to two Conference wins over Fresno State and San José State.
- Playing in the No. 2 spot instead of the usual No. 3, won both singles matches in straight sets and recorded dominant wins in doubles (6-4, 6-1).
