COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Klaire Kovatch became the third Ram to qualify for the NCAA Track and Field Championships as she punched her ticket in the discus event on the final day of the NCAA West Regionals on Saturday.
Kovatch entered the weekend expected to qualify as her season best ranked ninth in the region. Her first attempt of 52.64 meters/172-feet-8 was not enough to put her over the line, but her second throw of 54.32m/178-2 vaulted her into qualifying position. Kovatch sat in 12th place with a handful of competitors still to throw, but the Ram held on as the final scores came through to punch her ticket to Eugene.
Fellow Rams Makayla Long (52.24m/171-5) and Kajsa Borrman (50.54/165-10) finished 27th and 35th, respectively, both finishing above their projections entering the week.
Kovatch will join teammates Borrman (hammer) and Mya Lesnar (shot put) at the NCAA National Track and Field Championships, which will be held June 11-14 at Hayward Field.
