COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West announced its 2024-25 Women’s Golf All-Conference teams today, as well as the MW Women’s Golfer of the Year, MW Women’s Golf Freshman of the Year and MW Women’s Golf Coach of the Year, as voted on by the league’s nine head coaches.
San José State senior Lucia Lopez Ortega was named MW Women’s Golfer of the Year, New Mexico’s Maria Garcia was tabbed the MW Freshman of the Year and UNLV’s Amy Bush-Herzer garnered MW Coach of the Year honors.
The highest-ranked MW golfer at No. 74 nationally, Ortega captured her first career title this season, claiming the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Women’s Golf Championship. She shot a 5-under-par 211, bookending the tournament with 3-under 69s for a four-stroke win. It was Ortega’s second straight top-10 showing, as she capped the regular season with a sixth-place finish at the Chevron Silverado Showdown to earn her second MW Women’s Golfer of the Week award of the season. The Sa Coma, Mallorca, Spain, native is averaging 72.8 strokes this season and has helped the Spartans to five top-five finishes, including at the MW tournament, where SJSU tied for first but fell to UNLV in a two-hole playoff. Ortega and the Spartans will head to Arizona as the eighth seed at the Gold Canyon Regional from May 5-7. The Spartans have claimed the MW Women’s Golfer of the Year award in six of the last seven years and seven times overall.
Garcia, a unanimous selection as the MW Freshman of the Year, is the top-ranked freshman in the MW and the sixth-ranked Conference player overall at No. 276 nationally. Garcia posted three top-10 finishes in her rookie season, highlighted by a runner-up showing at the Jim West Challenge in October. The MW Freshman of the Month for both September and October, Garcia was also tabbed the MW Golfer of the Month in October before adding an MW Freshman of the Week honor on April 7. The Queretaro, Mexico, native fashioned a scoring average of 74.0 in her debut season and finished 17th at the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Women’s Championship. Garcia, who also earned second-team All-MW honors, is the eighth Lobo to be named the MW Freshman of the Year and the first since Myah McDonald in 2020-21.
Bush-Herzer, who received the maximum number of possible votes, is the MW Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her career and first since 2017-18. She earned UNLV’s sixth selection overall after leading the Rebels to their first MW title since 2018, as they topped San José State on the second playoff hole of the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Women’s Golf Championship at Mission Hills for the eighth MW title in program history. Bush-Herzer, whose squad is the top-ranked MW program at No. 39 and has been ranked in the top 40 nationally for the entirety of the season, leads her team into its third NCAA Regional in four seasons next week, as the Rebels will compete at the NCAA Columbus Regional as the No. 7 seed from May 5-7. In 10 events so far this season, Bush-Herzer has directed UNLV to seven top-two finishes, including a win at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in addition to its MW crown and runner-up finishes at five other tournaments. UNLV has a league-best three All-MW selections this season.
