COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico’s Pamela Kosgei has been named the Mountain West Women’s Track Athlete & Freshman of the Week for the second time during the outdoor season, while Nevada’s Lilly Urban earned her third MW Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor.
On the men’s side, New Mexico’s Habtom Samuel garnered the MW Men’s Track Athlete of the Week award and fellow Lobo Ishmael Kipkurui was named the MW Men’s Freshman of the Week. Utah State’s Logan Hammer picked up the MW Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honor.
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE & FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
PAMELA KOSGEI, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya/St. Agatha Mokpo Girls School
- Finished first in the 5,000-meter race at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
- Her time of 14:52.45 is the second-fastest in collegiate history, coming up just .27 seconds off the NCAA record.
- Set UNM program and Mountain West records, becoming the first woman in Conference history to finish in under 15 minutes.
- Holds the top time in the event in the NCAA outdoor season.
WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
LILLY URBAN, NEVADA
Sophomore, Frankfurt, Germany/Limesschule Idstein
- Broke her own Nevada program record in the javelin for the third time this season to win the event at the Mt. SAC Relays.
- Her mark of 55.45 meters ranks third-best in the Mountain West all-time.
- Ranks first in the Mountain West and 10th overall in the NCAA this season, including second among all sophomores.
MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
HABTOM SAMUEL, NEW MEXICO
Sophomore, Keren, Eritrea/Union HS/ Al Selef Al Salih
- Set the NCAA record after winning the 5,000-meter race at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
- Recorded a time of 13:05.87, beating the previous record of 13:06.32 set in 2022.
- Broke his own UNM program record and Mountain West record in the event.
- Also competed in the 1,500-meter race, clocking a career-best 3:38.60 to rank atop the Mountain West and No. 24 in the country.
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
LOGAN HAMMER, UTAH STATE
Junior, Nampa, Idaho/Columbia HS
- Recorded a pair of first-place finishes in the pole vault at the Pacific Coast Invitational and the Beach Invitational.
- Broke his own Utah State and Mountain West record twice this weekend, clearing heights of 5.68 meters and 5.70 meters.
- Top-ranked pole vaulter in the NCAA this season with a clearance of 5.70 meter.
MEN’S FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
ISHMAEL KIPKURUI, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Baringo County, Kenya/Sinonin Secondary School
- Finished second in the 5,000-meter race at the Bryan Clay Invitational behind teammate Habtom Samuel.
- Recorded a time of 13:09.24 for the fourth-fastest time in collegiate history.
- Time currently ranks No. 2 in the NCAA behind Samuel.
