LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV’s Illia Maksymchuk, seeded fifth, emerged as the singles champion of the inaugural Mountain West Qualifier staged this week at the Darling Tennis Center.
Maksymchuk, a sophomore from Ukraine, actually won before first serve of Saturday’s final as his opponent, Youssef Kadiri of UNR, defaulted because of injury.
Maksymchuk earned a bid to the ITA Masters set for Nov. 7-10 in Georgia. In the pilot year of this new championship format, each NCAA Division 1 AQ-eligible conference will host a tournament to designate one singles player and one doubles pair on both the men’s and women’s side to represent them in the ITA Conference Masters tournament, which is one of four qualifying pathways to this year’s NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
In doubles play, the Rebels’ remaining duo, Dusan Rsovac and Thomas Navarro, played in the third-place match but fell to Danil Kakhniuk of Nicolas Recoura of New Mexico, 6-4, 6-3.
