FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – For the first time this century, a Fresno State athlete will be competing in two events at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In her final collegiate season, Jordyn Bryant landed a personal best 17.14m/56-2.75 in the shot put on Thursday. On Saturday, the senior became the second Bulldog to ever throw over 60 meters in the discus when she recorded a toss of 61.03m/200-2 at John McDonnell Field.

Bryant will be making her second trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and first in the shot put after qualifying last year in the discus. Joining her in Eugene will be first-timers Amelia DiPaola (hammer) and Harriette Mortlock (javelin).

HOW IT HAPPENED
On Thursday, Bryant waited until her final attempt in the shot put to punch her ticket to the championships. Today, the senior was free of worry when her first throw registered 61.03m/200-2. Only one other competitor in the field would cross the 60-meter mark and Bryant would end the competition in first. Her mark is the third-longest in the event this week between the two regions.

Bryant went into the meet with a personal best of 59.70m/195-10.

NOTES

  • Since the start of the two-region qualifying format, Fresno State’s most entries to a single NCAA Championships was three. The Bulldogs will have four this year in Eugene.
  • Bryant will be the first Bulldog in the 21st century to compete in multiple events (discus/shot put) at a single NCAA Outdoor Championship meet.
  • Bryant is the fifth female Bulldog to compete at the NCAA Championships in the discus (Lacy Barnes, Talafulu Misa, Kayla Hopkins, Cierra Jackson).
  • Bryant will be just the first to compete in the event at the championships in back-to-back years since Lacy Barnes (1987, 1988).
  • Bryant moved up to No. 2 in program history in the discus.
  • Bryant will be one of six women competing at the NCAA Championships in both the discus and the shot put. Both regional sites this week saw three athletes qualify in both events.
