CARLSBAD, Calif. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team continued play Saturday at the 2024 NCAA Championship with the second round at the North Course of the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa. The Lobos shot 18-over during the second round, to finish the day tied for 22nd place at 29-over.

New Mexico had a strong start to the round, climbing as high as 10th on the leaderboard midway through the round, before the course’s difficult back nine caused them to fall down the standings. The Lobos will enter Sunday’s third round seven shots back of 15th place, which is the cutline for the final round of stroke play.

Albert Boneta had the low round of the day for the Lobos, shooting a 2-over 74 for the second straight day. Carson Herron bounced back on Saturday, following up a difficult first round 86 with a second round 75. Bastien Amat shot a second round 76, while Connor Adams and Matthew Watkins rounded out the lineup with scores of 81 and 83, respectively.

“The front nine, we did a really good job,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We stayed within ourselves and we played to our game plan. The back nine, those are the toughest holes on the golf course and they come at you fast. We didn’t do a good of executing on the back nine. We did some good things today, but we just need to make some more putts, especially those momentum building putts. It just tough when you get on the wrong side of the hole on this course.”

The NCAA Championship continues Sunday with the third round at La Costa. Following the third round, the top 15 teams make the cut to play Monday’s final round of stroke play. The top eight teams after the fourth round will play match play Tuesday and Wednesday for the national championship.
