LAS VEGAS – Boise State men’s tennis continued its quest for back-to-back Mountain West tournament championships with a 4-1 victory over New Mexico Thursday night in Las Vegas. The win secured the Broncos their seventh appearance in the MW Championship match on Friday night.

The Blue and Orange opened the day by taking the team doubles point 2-1 over the Lobos. After UNM had taken a 1-0 lead, Boise State rallied behind Sam Sippel’s and Jan Lucca Marquardt’s 6-3 win on court one, followed by Caden Moortgat’s and Jett Middleton’s 6-2 victory at the second position.

John Chin gave the Broncos a 2-0 advantage when he won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Idriss Haddouch pushed the Blue and Orange to within one of victory following his 6-3, 7-6(2) win on court five.

After New Mexico pulled to within 3-1, Boise State’s Sippel turned in the match-clinching victory when he defeated Arda Azkara in straight sets, 7-6(6), 6-3 at the top court.

Notables

  • Boise State has won six straight and 12 of its last 13 matches to improve to 19-10 overall.
  • With the victory over New Mexico, the Broncos are now 7-0 all-time in the MW Championship semifinals since joining the league with the 2012 campaign.
  • Boise State has now won five straight contests at the MW Championship, stretching back to last year’s championship run.
  • Sippel and Marquardt won their seventh match as a team and improved to 7-2.
  • Moortgat and Middleton earned their fifth consecutive victory and moved to 6-2 overall.
  • Chin moved to 18-11 on the year following his fifth straight win and is now 14-6 in team duals.
  • Haddouch extended his team-best win streak to 19, improving to 24-10 overall and 20-1 in team duals this spring.
  • Sippel won his 17th match of the year and the 10th at No. 1 singles.

What’s Next

Boise State will play for its sixth MW tournament championship Friday night against four-seed San Diego State at 6 p.m. MT. The Aztecs upset the No. 1 seed Utah State Aggies 4-3 Thursday night.
