LAS VEGAS – The San Diego State men’s tennis team opened the Mountain West Championships on Wednesday with the Quarterfinals. The fourth-seeded Aztecs faced fifth-seeded Nevada at Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas. SDSU won the doubles point and the first two singles matches to take a commanding 3-0 lead on its way to a 4-1 victory. San Diego State advances to Thursday’s Semifinals, a round the team has only missed once in tournament history (last season).
The Scarlet and Black improve to 15-6 on the year and end the Wolf Pack season at 6-14.
In doubles, Robin Parts and Alexander Mandma (8-6) played on the second court and faced Loris Zisswiller and Remy Tregoures. The Aztecs were bested 6-1. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Johannes Seeman (8-2) competed on the top court against Matheo Coupu and Youssef Kadiri. They earned a 6-2 victory to make the third court decide the doubles point. Chikaya Sato and Bora Sengul (5-2) faced off against Edgar Destouet and Gregoire Valente on that third court. The Aztec pair came out on top in a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Mandma (11-4) played on court No. 6 against Valente. Mandma coasted to a 6-2, 6-1 victory to extend the Aztec lead to 2-0.
On the fifth court, Parts (15-0) faced Tregoures. He won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to put Nevada on the brink of elimination.
In his match, Sato (8-11) went up against Destouet on court No. 4. Sato battled in the first set but came up short in a 7-5 loss. The second set was also close but again went to Destouet 6-4 as Nevada got on the board.
All-Mountain West selection Seeman (5-13) faced Coupu on the top court. After falling 6-3 in the first set, Seeman bounced back to take the second 6-4. He carried that momentum over into the third set for a 6-3 win to send the Aztecs on to the Semifinals.
Two matches did not finish. Another All-Mountain West honoree, Sengul (7-6) played Zisswiller on court No. 2. Sengul also fell 6-3 in the first set but did not concede. He battled back and won the second set 6-3. Sengul led 4-3 in the third set when the Aztecs clinched a win. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice (11-5) battled Kadiri on the third court. The Aztec earned a 6-2 victory in the opening set but was unable to close out the match in the second, falling 6-4. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice held a 4-2 lead in the deciding third set when the match was decided.
Fourth-seeded San Diego State will face top-seeded Utah State in the Semifinals at 5 p.m. on Thursday. The Aggies spoiled the Aztecs’ Senior Day last Saturday in a 4-0 result. SDSU holds an 8-13 record all-time in the Semifinals.
