COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico’s Arda Azkara was tabbed the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while Air Force’s Alec Fritzinger was selected as the MW Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week.
On the women’s side, New Mexico’s Hsuan Huang was named the MW Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and Air Force’s Nadia Kojonroj earned the MW Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Week nod.
MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ARDA AZKARA, NEW MEXICO
Junior, Ismet, Turkey
- Helped the Lobos to a 4-3 win over No. 67 Utah State.
- The junior came from behind to defeat Bodin Zarkovic in a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) thriller at No. 1, tying the match 3-3.
MEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
ALEC FRITZINGER, AIR FORCE
Goldsboro, North Carolina/South Carolina Connections Academy
- Helped the Falcons to a 1-1 week in Conference action with a 4-3 win over Nevada and 4-2 loss to No. 67 Utah State.
- Posted a 2-0 record in singles on the fourth court.
- Against Nevada’s Edgar Destouet, logged a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win, boosting the Academy to come back from a 3-0 deficit.
- Against Utah State’s Nuno Pinheiro, posted a straight-sets victory, 6-2, 6-1.
WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
HSUAN HUANG, NEW MEXICO
Senior, Zhubel City, Taiwan/Yang Ming HS
- Helped the Lobos to a 2-0 week with wins over Boise State (4-2) and Utah State (4-0).
- Logged a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Boise State’s Joana Baptista in the No. 3 singles position.
- Posted a 6-3 win on doubles court No. 2 with partner Maria Sodre, defeating Boise State’s Nicole Discenza and Shauna Heffernan.
- Against Utah State’s Lisa Küng on singles court No. 3, recorded a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory as well as a 6-4 win in doubles on court No. 2 with teammate Sodre over Küng and Ana Paula Chavez Sanchez.
