COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State sophomore Leia Chung has been named the Mountain West Women’s Golfer of the Week, while Colorado State’s Kara Kaneshiro was tabbed the MW Freshman of the Week.
The weekly honor is the third for Chung, who also has a monthly MW honor to her credit in her career. It’s the third weekly honor of the season for Kaneshiro, who was also the MW Freshman of the Month for September.
GOLFER OF THE WEEK
LEIA CHUNG, BOISE STATE
Sophomore, Wahiawa, Hawai‘i/Leilehua HS
• Shared medalist honors at the Pizza Hut-Lady Thunderbird Invitational at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah.
• Shot an even-par 216 to pace the 80-player field and earn her first collegiate title.
• Opened with a 4-over 76 before logging a 3-under 69 and a 1-under 71.
• Led the field with 40 pars and shared the tournament lead in averages on the par-3s (3.00) and par-5s (4.75).
• Led Boise State to a 10-stroke win in the team race.
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
KARA KANESHIRO, COLORADO STATE
Honolulu, Hawai‘i/Kalani HS
• Shot a 6-over-par 222 to tie for 11th at the Tulane Classic at the English Turn Golf & Country Club in New Orleans.
• Turned in a second-round 4-under 68, the lowest round for any Colorado State golfer on the week.
• Logged her third top-15 finish of the season.
• Helped the Rams to their second tournament win of the season, as CSU topped a 17-team field that included six squads ranked in the top 100 nationally.
