COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West announced its 2022 Volleyball All-Mountain West team and individual award winners as voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches. UNLV’s Isabel Martin was named Player of the Year, teammate Jhenna Gabriel won Newcomer of the Year, Wyoming’s Tierney Barlow earned Freshman of the Year honors. Coach of the Year award goes to Dawn Sullivan of UNLV after leading the Rebels to a 17-1 in league play.
NOTABLES
- Colorado State, UNLV and San José State led the way with three All-Conference honorees each.
- Colorado State has had at least three student-athletes on the All-Mountain West team every season since 2009.
- Boise State’s Lauren Ohlinger and New Mexico’s Kaitlynn Biassou are both three-time All-MW honorees.
- UNLV won three of four individual awards, the first MW program to win at least three individual awards in a single season since 2017. This is just the third season this feat has been accomplished, joining Colorado State in 2011 and 2017.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
ISABEL MARTIN, UNLV
Junior, Outside Hitter, Mauerstetten, Bavaria, Germany/Hillsborough CC
- Helped the Rebels to seven consecutive 2-0 weeks.
- Averaged 3.81 kills per set in league play.
- Recorded 244 kills, 11 service aces, five solo blocks, 31 assisted blocks, for a total of 275.5 points during the Rebels’ MW slate.
- Earned two Mountain West weekly honors for Offensive Player of the Week, Oct. 31 and Nov.7.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
JHENNA GABRIEL, UNLV
Senior, Setter, Honolulu, Hawaii/Maryknoll HS/Texas
- First ever Rebel to win Newcomer of the Year award since the honor was introduced in 2010.
- Assisted the Rebels to seven consecutive 2-0 weeks.
- Leads the MW in assists with 678 assists, averaging 10.59 per set.
- Posted double digits for assists and digs on eight different occasions throughout the Conference season.
- Helped the Rebels secure the No. 1 seed in the Conference tournament with a 17-1 record in league play.
FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
TIERNEY BARLOW, WYOMING
Middle Blocker, Colorado Springs, Colorado/Liberty HS
- First Cowgirl to earn Freshman of the Year honors since 2017 (Marissa Harmon) and fifth overall.
- Finished the regular season ranked sixth in the Mountain West in hitting at .379.
- In 18 Conference matches, collected 160 kills, 61 blocks and 204.0 points.
- Earned MW Freshman of the Week honors on Oct. 3.
COACH OF THE YEAR
DAWN SULLIVAN, UNLV
- Led UNLV to its second regular-season MW title.
- Led the Rebels to a 17-1 league record.
- Won 17 consecutive matches, the fourth-longest active win streak nationally.
- Reached 100 wins earlier in the 2022 season, her fifth year of coaching. The fastest coach to do so in program history.
- First Coach of the Year award since Spring 2021 season.
- First Rebel head coach to win distinction multiple times in career.
