RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – San José State claimed the 2022 Mountain West Women’s Golf Championship in record fashion on Wednesday, winning by 30 strokes, the largest margin of victory in championship history.
The Spartans (279-290-291 – 860), who entered the week ranked No. 5 nationally by Golfstat, were never threatened as they won wire-to-wire for their first MW women’s golf championship in program history. SJSU became just the fifth different team champion in MW history.
New Mexico, which won the Conference title last year, finished in second place, shooting a 26-over par 890. Finishing just one stroke behind the Lobos was Fresno State, which came in third place for the third time since the Bulldogs joined the Mountain West in 2012.
San José State’s Natasha Andrea Oon became the first Spartan to earn individual medalist honors at the MW women’s golf championship, shooting a 10-under par 206, the lowest 54-hole score in MW championship history. Oon (65-70-71), who finished seven strokes ahead of teammate Lucia Lopez-Ortega, also set a championship record for largest margin of victory, defeating her teammate by seven strokes.
There was a tie for third place between San José State’s Kajsa Arwefjall and New Mexico’s Lauren Lehigh at even-par 216.
This was the first 1, 2, 3 finish by a single program in MW women’s golf championship history.
Competing on the Par 72, 6,286-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club, the average score at the end of the 54-hole event was 75.81.
San José State has secured the Mountain West’s automatic bid to NCAA Regionals and will learn their field and regional location on Wednesday, April 27 at 2 p.m. MT. The selection show is live on the Golf Channel.
