COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico quarterback Isaiah Chavez has been tabbed the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, while Hawai‘i linebacker Darius Muasau was named MW Defensive Player of the Week. San José State kickoff returner Shamar Garrett earned MW Special Teams Player of the Week honors. It is the first MW weekly honor for all three.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ISAIAH CHAVEZ, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Quarterback, Rio Rancho, New Mexico / Rio Rancho HS

  • A true freshman walk-on making his first collegiate start, led New Mexico to its highest point total of the season in a 49-39 victory over Fresno State.
  • Completed 14-of-18 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 95 yards and a score on 15 carries.
  • Scored New Mexico’s opening touchdown midway through the first quarter, a three-yard run to tie the game.
  • In the third quarter, completed a 49-yard passing touchdown to begin the Lobos 28-0 run.
  • He is believed to be the first true freshman walk-on to start a game in program history.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
DARIUS MUASAU, HAWAI‘I
Sophomore, Linebacker, ‘Ewa Beach, O‘ahu / Mililani HS

  • Led Hawai‘i with a career high 18 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack, in the Rainbow Warriors victory over UNLV.
  • The 18 tackles were the most by a UH defender since 2007.
  • Recorded his lone sack early in the second quarter, a one-yard loss.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SHAMAR GARRETT, SAN JOSÉ STATE
Freshman, Kickoff Returner, Livermore, California / De La Salle HS

  • Returned three kickoffs for 131 yards, including a 98-yard touchdown return in San José State’s come-from-behind victory over Nevada to clinch a spot in the 2020 Mountain West Football Championship Game.
  • On the opening play of the second half, cut the Wolf Pack’s lead in half with the 98-yard touchdown, sixth longest kickoff return in program history. 
  • It was the first kickoff return touchdown by a Spartan since 2015.
