COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 23 Mountain West student-athletes competing at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships turned in outstanding performances in Eugene last week. The league captured three individual national titles, three national runners-up and amassed a combined 19 First- and Second-Team All-America honors to go along with eight honorable mention awards.

New Mexico junior Habtom Samuel put on a show at Hayward Field as he swept the 5,000-meter (13:38.93) and 10,000-meter (27:51.31) races to become just the sixth athlete to complete the distance double at the same national meet in the 21st century and the 15th overall in collegiate history. The pair of golds caps an incredible year for Samuel, who also won the 2025 NCAA Men’s Cross Country title last fall and took first in the 5,000-meter race at the 2026 NCAA Indoor Championship in March. The 10k win was also the second of his career after he won the 2024 outdoor title as a freshman. Overall, the Eritrea native has collected a total of five national individual titles and 13 First-Team All-American finishes across cross country, indoor and outdoor, making him the most decorated runner in Mountain West history.

The Conference’s third national title of the week went to Lobo sophomore Marion Jepngetich, who ran a personal-best of 15:13.01. After initially finishing second, a disqualification of the first-place finisher moved Jepngetich onto the top of the podium for her first national title and first-team honors in the event for a second straight season. Fellow Lobo Pamela Kosgei joined Jepngetich in the top five, finishing fifth overall (15:15.88) for her second career first-team honor in the event. Kosgei added a national runner-up finish in the 10,000-meter (31:56.49) for a second consecutive top-two finish and First-Team All-America honors.

The two other second-place finishes came from Utah State’s Logan Hammer and Air Force’s Texas Tanner.

Hammer, who already owned the top-five marks in the pole vault in Mountain West history, cleared a personal-best of 5.75 meters, setting the Conference record and matching the highest finish for the league in the event since 2008.

Tanner wrapped up his historic collegiate hammer career with a silver-medal finish, his highest across indoor and outdoor, with a mark of 75.78 meters, good for First-Team All-America honors. The senior nabbed his second first-team award of the week when he finished fifth in the discus (63.75m).

Rounding out the first-team honors were Colorado State’s Klaire Kovatch and Nevada’s Lilly Urban, each earning fifth place in their respective events. Kovatch registered a mark of 57.01 meters in the discus, while Urban recorded a throw of 55.88 meters.
