COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Nevada’s Greg Valente has been named the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Utah State’s Jakub Medved was named MW Men’s Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season.
On the women’s side, San Diego State’s Jo-Yee Chan picked up her third MW Women’s Player of the Week no this season and Boise State’s Carla Grignac collected her second straight MW Women’s Freshman of the Week honor and her fourth overall weekly honor of the year.
MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
GREG VALENTE, NEVADA
RS Junior, Aix en Provence, France/Les Maristes
- Captured the dual-clinching singles match at No. 4 with a come-from-behind 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-2 victory over Grand Canyon’s Daniel Jankoski, helping Nevada to a 4-3 upset-win over No. 65 GCU in the regular-season finale.
- After dropping a first-set tiebreaker, 8-6, stormed back to take the second set, 6-4, and cruised to a 6-2 third-set win, ending the three-and-a-half hour dual.
- Played at No. 1 doubles with Axel Huysmans and battled GCU’s No. 1 tandem despite a 7-5 defeat.
MEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
JAKUB MEDVED, UTAH STATE
Banská Bystrica, Slovakia/Sport’s Gymnasium
- Posted a singles and doubles win during Utah State’s 7-0 shutout-win at Weber State.
- Teamed with sophomore Xavier Calvelo to record a 6-2 win at the top spot in the lineup.
- Posted a three-set victory at No. 4 singles to complete the 7-0 sweep for the Aggies.
WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JO-YEE CHAN, SAN DIEGO STATE
Senior, Sugar Hill, Georgia/Oregon
- Clinched the win over Grand Canyon that secured a share of the Mountain West regular-season title.
- Recorded a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) singles win at the No. 1 flight over GCU’s Bella Crossman.
- Helped capture the doubles point, playing alongside Vessa Turley at the No. 1 position.
WOMEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
CARLA GRIGNAC, BOISE STATE
Dakar, Senegal/CNED France
- Earned a dominant 6-1 doubles win at No. 3 to help Boise State secure the doubles point and the eventual 4-1 win against Utah State, with the win clinching a share of the MW regular-season title for the Broncos.
- Led her No. 6 singles match 3-0 before the match was clinched.
