LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men’s tennis secured the outright Mountain West regular season title on Saturday with a 4-2 win over 65th-ranked Boise State at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club.
With the victory, the Aggies finish the conference season unblemished with a 7-0 record and also complete its home schedule with a perfect 8-0 mark. Both are firsts for the program since 2018.
Utah State also celebrated Senior Day, honoring the careers of Jean-Baptiste Badon and Keanu Rigby prior to the match.
Doubles
Starting on the outdoor courts, the Broncos made the first move of doubles play, securing a 6-4 win at the first position. After weather forced the match indoors, USU responded as sophomores Eliot Nobel and Roman Venger posted a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Boise State then secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the second spot, however, snapping a streak of 12-straight matches in which the Aggies claimed the doubles point.
Singles
Facing a 1-0 deficit for the first time since mid-February, Utah State swiftly reclaimed the lead with wins at three of the top-four positions. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Xavier Calvelo squared things at 1 all with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Nobel then put USU in front with a 6-4, 7-5 win, earning a break point to close out the win. Seconds later, Badon also won on a break point, coming back from a set down to post a 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 win, putting the Aggies up, 3-1.
The Broncos reclaimed another point at No. 5 singles to draw back within a point before Venger closed out the victory for USU, completing a sweep of the top-four positions of the singles lineup. Venger won, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1, at the fourth position, completing USU’s undefeated run through conference play and clinching the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Mountain West Tournament.
