COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State junior Aleksi Lofman has been selected as the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week and Boise State’s Filip Soderqvist is the MW Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week.
On the women’s side, Air Force senior Abby Cotuna earned MW Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honors, while Utah State’s Terezia Mlkva picked up her second consecutive MW Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Week award.
MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ALEKSI LOFMAN, SAN DIEGO STATE
Junior, Helsinki, Finland/LSU
- Went 2-0 in his singles and doubles matches at the No. 1 spot to help the Aztecs defeat Utah, 4-3.
- Clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-2) win alongside William Kleege.
- Secured the team victory with a win over Utah’s No. 1, Dante Teramo, in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
MEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
FILIP SODERQVIST, BOISE STATE
Norrtalje, Sweden
- Went 4-0 across singles and doubles, helping the Broncos to a pair of wins over Wichita State, 6-1, and Denver, 5-2.
- Both singles wins came at the No. 2 spot, which included defeating nationally ranked (No. 101) Zaid Mashni of Wichita State (3-6, 6-4, 6-2).
- Clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 spot against Wichita State, 6-4, and won the No. 3 doubles match against Denver, 6-2.
WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ABBY COTUNA, AIR FORCE
Senior, Charleston, South Carolina/ S.C. Connections Academy
- Playing at No. 1 singles, Cotuna defeated Army’s Madison Smith in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, ending Smith’s six-match winning streak.
- Teamed up with Sofia Mavor in the No. 3 doubles spot and shut out Army’s duo of Olivia Mellynchuk Emily Ruckno, 6-0, handing the pair their first defeat of the season.
WOMEN’S TENNIS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
TEREZIA MLKVA, UTAH STATE
Piestany, Slovakia/ Gymnazium Pierra de Coubertina
- Went 3-1 combined across singles and doubles in matches against Gonzaga and Eastern Washington.
- Won both her No. 1 singles matches in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1 over Gonzaga’s Diana Yanotovskaya and 6-4, 6-4 over Eastern Washington’s Anait Arutiunian.
- Playing with teammate Natalie Paterova as the No. 2 pair, helped secure the doubles point against EWU with a 6-3 win.
