COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Old Trapper Mountain West Football Players of the Week have been announced for Week 0. Hawai‘i quarterback Micah Alejado has been tabbed the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, while teammate senior safety Kilinahe Mendiola-Jensen was named MW Defensive Player of the Week and Rainbow Warrior senior placekicker Kansei Matsuzawa earned MW Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
The MW awards are the third and fourth for Alejado, who also swept offensive and freshman honors on Dec. 2 of last season, and the first for Mendiola-Jensen and Matsuzawa.
OLD TRAPPER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK/FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
MICAH ALEJADO, HAWAI‘I
Redshirt Freshman, Quarterback, Las Vegas, Nevada/Bishop Gorman HS
• Completed 27-of-39 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 10 times for 36 yards to lead Hawai‘i past Stanford, 23-20.
• Threw touchdown passes in the first and second quarters and orchestrated the game-tying and game-winning drives in the fourth quarter.
• Helped the Rainbow Warriors to their first wins over Stanford and an ACC team in program history.
• Was making just his second career start.
OLD TRAPPER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KILINAHE MENDIOLA-JENSEN, HAWAI‘I
Senior, Safety, Pearl City, Oahu, Hawai‘i/UNLV
• Intercepted his first career pass deep in Hawai‘i territory with the Rainbow Warriors trailing 20-17 with just over six minutes left in the game.
• The turnover led to Hawai‘i’s game-tying field goal with two minutes left.
• Recorded four tackles, including three solo stops, and two pass breakups.
• Led a defense that allowed just 13 offensive points.
OLD TRAPPER SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KANSEI MATSUZAWA, HAWAI‘I
Senior, Placekicker, Tokyo, Japan/Hocking College
• Kicked the game-winning 38-yard field goal as time expired to give Hawai‘i a 23-20 win over Stanford.
• Also connected on a 37-yard field goal to tie the game at 20 with 2:01 left in the contest.
• Converted a 40-yard field-goal, one yard shy of his career long, in the third quarter.
• Finished with a career-best three field goals and added two extra points to total 11 points on the day.
