WEEK ZERO NOTES

  • The FBS season once again starts with the Mountain West, as three of the five Week 0 FBS games on Saturday, Aug. 23, feature MW teams. Two of those games are at home, with UNLV hosting Idaho State and Hawai‘i welcoming Stanford. Fresno State visits Kansas to kick off the 2025 campaign.
  • UNLV, which is receiving votes in both the The Associated Press and US LBM Coaches preseason polls, will attempt to win its fourth consecutive season-opener. The Rebels’ current three-game season-opening winning streak began with a 52-21 win over Idaho State in 2022.
  • UNLV has scored at least 20 points in each of its last 22 regular-season games (excluding MW championship games). That’s the second-longest active such streak in the FBS, behind only Memphis (37 straight).
  • Fresno State is opening its season against an Autonomous 4 opponent for the third straight season. The Bulldogs downed Purdue to open the 2023 season before falling at then-No. 8/9 Michigan to lift the lid on their 2024 campaign.
  • The Bulldogs will be playing a Big 12 school for the first time since a 45-29 win over Kansas State in November 2007. Fresno State has scored at least 45 points in three straight games against Big 12 opponents – no non-Big 12 team has ever done that in four straight.
  • Hawai‘i will be taking on an ACC opponent for the first time in program history. The Rainbow Warriors last faced Stanford in 2023, when the Cardinal was a member of the Pac-12. Hawai‘i won its season-opener last year, taking a 35-14 victory over Delaware State.
  • Two of the MW’s Week 0 games feature coaches making their team debuts. Former Florida and Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen, the 2014 National College Football Coach of the Year, takes the reins at UNLV after spending the last three seasons as an ESPN college football analyst. Matt Entz, a two-time FCS National Coach of the Year during a five-year stint as the head coach at North Dakota State, where he led the Bison to a pair of FCS championships, takes over at Fresno State after serving as the assistant head coach for defense and linebackers coach at USC in 2024.
  • Preseason Mountain West favorite Boise State is ranked No. 25 in both The Associated Press and US LBM Coaches preseason polls. The Broncos appear in the preseason rankings for the first time since 2018. BSU opens its season on Thursday, Aug. 28, at South Florida.
  • MW teams will play 16 autonomous conference opponents in 2025, including three of the four CFP semifinalists from last season (Nevada at Penn State on Aug. 30, San José State at Texas on Sept. 6 and Boise State at Notre Dame on Oct. 4). League squads will play four of those A4 games at home, with Hawai‘i hosting Stanford in Week 0, UCLA at UNLV on Sept. 6, Utah at Wyoming on Sept. 13 and California at San Diego State on Sept. 20.
  • This season, MW squads have a total of 11 nonconference games scheduled against teams ranked or receiving votes in the preseason US LBM (AFCA) and/or AP top-25 polls, including two at home. Of those 11 contests, five are against preseason ranked squads, with three inside the top 10.
