COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico’s Pamela Kosgei has been named the Mountain West Women’s Track Athlete and Freshman of the Week, while Nevada’s Lilly Urban earned the MW Women’s Field Athlete of the Week award for the second time in the last three weeks.
Kosgei was also named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Co-National Athlete of the Week for the second time in her career.
On the men’s side, New Mexico first-year runner Matthew Kosgei garnered the MW Men’s Track Athlete of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors. Colorado State’s Ismael Dembele was named the MW Men’s Field Athlete of the Week.
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE & FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
PAMELA KOSGEI, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya/St. Agatha Mokpo Girls School
- Clocked the second-fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase time (9:15.93) in NCAA history to win the event at the Stanford Invitational.
- Broke the UNM program and the all-time Mountain West records of 9:24.41 set by Courtney Frerichs at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships, which was an NCAA record at the time of competition.
WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
LILLY URBAN, NEVADA
Sophomore, Frankfurt, Germany/ Limesschule Idstein
- Placed first in the javelin with a throw of 53.70 meters at the Stanford Invitational.
- Set a Nevada program record for the second time in as many meets after breaking a 19-year old mark in the outdoor season opener.
- Ranks No. 11 in the NCAA in javelin overall, No. 1 in the Mountain West and is the top sophomore in the country in the event.
MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE & FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
MATTHEW KOSGEI, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Tambach, Kenya/St. Francis Kimuron Secondary School
- In his first collegiate steeplechase race, won the event at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 8:22.13.
- Shattered the all-time MW and a UNM program record that had stood since 1977, while the time ranks No. 16 in the NCAA all time and is the top time in the country this year.
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
ISMAEL DEMBELE, COLORADO STATE
Junior, Aurora, Colorado/ Rangeview HS / Western Colorado
- Won the triple jump at the UNLV Rebel Elite with a wind-assisted jump of 15.92 meters, the top mark in the MW.
- Recorded a wind-assisted jump of15.60 meters on another attempt, a top 20 jump in the NCAA this season.
- Posted a personal-best 15.38 meters on his second attempt.
