LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Utah State’s men’s tennis team excelled in the 2024 Mountain West Fall Individuals Qualifiers, highlighted by the doubles pairing of senior David Martirosian and sophomore Mohammad Alkotop winning the doubles bracket as a two seed, while senior Sergi Micó Fenollar placed fourth in the singles bracket as a one seed.
The qualifiers took place from Wednesday, Oct. 2, through Saturday, Oct. 5. USU competed against several in-conference opponents, including Air Force, Boise State, New Mexico, UNLV, Nevada and San Diego State.
On day one of the qualifiers, Fenollar posted two wins in singles competition in the round of 32 and 16. In other singles matches, freshman Roman Venger, Martirosian and Alkotop each fell in the round of 32. In doubles play, Martirosian and Alkotop posted a win in the round of 16.
On day two of the qualifier in singles play, Fenollar won his quarterfinal match in straight sets that were decided by a tiebreak (6-4, 7-6(7)), and Alkotop posted a win in the round of 16 in straight sets (6-2, 6-4). In doubles play, Martirosian and Alkotop posted an 8-6 win in the quarterfinals.
On the third day of competition, the Aggies’ day was highlighted by Martirosian and Alkotop winning in their semifinal match 6-1, 6-4. In singles play, Fenollar fell to fifth-seeded Illia Maysymchuk in the semifinals.
On the final day, Martirosian and Alkotop faced the top-seeded doubles pairing of Lucas Hammond and Youssef Kadiri from Nevada. The Aggies came out on top, winning in two sets due to Nevada’s retirement (6-4, 3-0, RET). Fenollar faced off against two seed Arjun Kersten from Air Force in the third-place match, where he lost in two sets to earn fourth place in the qualifier.
USU will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 17, through Tuesday, Oct. 22, as it competes in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada.
