COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – UNLV senior Toa Yokoyama has been tabbed the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Month for September, while New Mexico rookie Maria Garcia has been selected as the MW Freshman of the Month.

The monthly honors are the first for both athletes. Yokoyama was twice named the MW Golfer of the Week in 2023-24.

GOLFER OF THE MONTH
TOA YOKOYAMA, UNLV
Senior, Tokyo, Japan, IMG Academy/Laurel Spring School

  • Fashioned a pair of top-10 finishes to open the 2024-25 campaign, averaging 70.67 strokes over six rounds, five of which were under par.
  • Kicked off her season with a third-place finish at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, shooting a 6-under-par 210 (71-71-68) to help the Rebels to a runner-up team finish.
  • Closed with a 4-under 68 to move up two spots in the standings in the final round.
  • Back that finish up with a ninth-place showing at the Red Raider Invitational, shooting a 2-under 214 (74-70-70) to lead UNLV to another second-place team result.
  • Moved up eight spots in the final round with her second straight 2-under 70.

FRESHMAN OF THE MONTH
MARIA GARCIA, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Queretaro, Mexico/Prepa Anahuac Queretaro

  • Averaged 73.00 strokes over six rounds to open her collegiate career.
  • Shot three rounds of par or better, a team-best on the young season.
  • Tied for 10th at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, firing a 3-under-par 69 in her first collegiate round and finishing with a 1-over 217.
  • Became the first Lobo to record a top-10 finish in her debut since 2008-09.
  • Followed that up with another top-25 finish at the Red Raider Invitational, tying for 24th with a 5-over 221 (72-74-75).
