COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State junior midfielder Denise Castro has been named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, while Nevada senior goalkeeper Emily McCue was selected as the MW Defensive Player of the Week. UNLV’s Cassie Villanueva has been tabbed the MW Freshman of the Week.

 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DENISE CASTRO, SAN DIEGO STATE

Junior, Midfielder, San Ysidro, California/San Ysidro HS

  • Led San Diego State to a 1-0-1 record on the road with a win at Fresno State (5-1) and a draw at San José State (2-2).
  • Tallied six points on the week with a pair of goals and assists. Also posted five shots and four shots on goal.
  • At Fresno State, recorded the first goal and assisted on the fourth goal of the match.
  • At San José State, scored the first goal and assisted on the equalizer.

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

EMILY MCCUE, NEVADA

Senior, Goalkeeper, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Florida Gulf Coast

  • Guided Nevada to a road victory against Wyoming (1-0).
  • Recorded her first shutout of the season against the Cowgirls.
  • Posted two saves in 90 minutes in goal.

 

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

CASSIE VILLANUEVA, UNLV

Forward, La Mirada, California/La Mirada HS

  • Helped UNLV to a 1-0-1 record with a win at Wyoming (2-1) and a draw at Colorado State (1-1).
  • Scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute against the Cowgirls.
  • Totaled six shots and three shots on goal in two matches.
