USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Evan Urbina has been named head coach for Air Force men’s tennis, announced today by Director of Athletics Nathan Pine. Urbina was promoted after serving the previous nine seasons on the men’s tennis staff.

“Evan Urbina has been an instrumental part of our program’s success in all facets and quickly rose to the top of our search as the right person to lead our men’s tennis program moving forward,” Pine said. “He will now step into the leadership role and will build upon our program’s successes while continuing to develop leaders of character for our Air Force and Space Force. I’m thrilled for Evan and his family and look forward to working with him to continue to elevate Air Force men’s tennis.”

“”I’m thrilled to be the next head coach of such a unique and storied program,” Urbina said. “My mentor, Dan Oosterhous, graciously allowed me to be his assistant for the last nine years and his leadership has prepared me for this amazing opportunity. My wife Sarah and I feel proud to be raising our kids here around so many inspiring people.

Our team is special, and we can’t wait to get back on the courts this fall and work hard to accomplish the goals that we’ve set for this program. Go Falcons!”

Urbina served as the assistant coach from 2014 to 2017 and was promoted to associate head coach during the 2017-18 season. He replaces Dan Oosterhous, who announced his retirement from coaching following the 2022-23 season (now working in the Air Force Athletic Department as the Associate Athletic Director for Recruiting).

While at the Air Force Academy, Urbina has been involved in recruiting four ranked mid-major classes (2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023). The incoming 2023-24 Air Force freshman class was the 14th-ranked mid-major men’s tennis class according to tennisrecruiting.net.

Urbina came to the Academy from his alma mater Brigham Young, where he was the women’s assistant coach from 2013-2014. While there, the Cougars had a season high national ranking of 51 and finished 2nd in the West Coast Conference with a 7-1 record.

Before coaching at BYU, Urbina was the volunteer assistant for the men’s tennis team at Florida State University for the 2012-2013 season. At Florida State he helped coach the men’s team to wins over #7 Oklahoma and #15 Texas to earn a season high ranking of #16 in the nation. They competed in the NCAA tournament. He also helped coach a high performance tennis program for juniors in the area.
Urbina began his coaching career at Orem High School in Utah as the boy’s tennis coach in 2011-12 while finishing his degree at BYU. He graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. Urbina competed for BYU from 2007-2011 and lettered all four years. He is the third-winningest player in school history with a 98-57 singles record. He had an 80-56 career record in doubles. He finished his senior season ranked sixth in the Mountain Region in both singles and doubles and was selected twice to the All-MWC singles team. His highest individual ranking was #110 in singles. He was team captain his senior year for a squad that won both the regular season conference championship and the Mountain West Conference tournament. He competed in the NCAA tournament his junior and senior year, and played both #1 singles and doubles during his time there. BYU was ranked as high as #23 during his junior year, and finished his senior year at #36.

Originally from Huntington Beach, Calif., Urbina attended San Joaquin High School. He is married to the former Sarah Weaver. They have three children, sons Maverick and Brecken and daughter Rivka, who was born in early 2020.
