Phil Perry joined the Mountain West in August 2023 as the Assistant Commissioner of Strategic Communications. Perry provides the vision, guidance, and leadership for MW’s strategic communications team serving thirteen member institutions. He is the primary contact for football and men’s and women’s golf while also serving as the event planner for football and basketball media days and the MW Basketball Championships. Perry oversees messaging, timing, and production of all publicity materials, focusing on initiatives designed to elevate the MW to the highest possible levels of performance and exposure.
Perry came to the MW from the Southern Conference, where he joined the league in 2012 as the assistant director of media relations, assumed leadership as the department’s assistant commissioner in 2017, and then was elevated to associate commissioner in 2022. He was the primary contact for football, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country and track and field, and men’s and women’s tennis as well as overseeing the SoCon website.
Prior to his time at the SoCon, Perry spent nearly four years on the media relations staff at SoCon member school UNCG (2008-12) after serving as a copy editor at The Herald in Rock Hill, South Carolina from the summer of 2007 to the fall of 2008. Before those roles, he was an assistant media relations director at Indiana University for the 2006-07 academic year after completing a one-year internship in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s media relations department. He began his career as an assistant director of media relations at Gardner-Webb University (2002-05).
Perry, a Conway, South Carolina, native, earned a degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of North Carolina in 2002.
