Now in her 18th year with the Mountain West, Kim Melcher serves as the Executive Assistant for MW Commissioner Gloria Nevarez. As part of her responsibilities, Melcher coordinates the Commissioner’s schedule, including meetings and travel, and performs the duties of administrative liaison to the MW Board of Directors. She also coordinates the Conference’s annual Board and Joint Council meetings and serves as hospitality liaison for other MW meetings and events.
Additionally, Melcher assists the deputy commissioner while also helping to coorindate the day-to-day office administration.
Melcher joined the Mountain West in October 2006 as the Director of Communications before being promoted to Assistant Commissioner for Communications in 2012. After spending her first eight years with the MW communications staff, she began transitioning into an administrative role within the Conference office, assuming those duties on a full-time basis in 2015.
During her time with the MW communications staff, Melcher had primary media contact responsibility for a variety of sports, including baseball, men’s basketball, women’s soccer, softball and men’s and women’s tennis. She also served as the secondary contact for football while assisting with the administration of several conference championships and the overall communications operation. In addition, Melcher served as the administrative sport liaison for men’s and women’s tennis and oversaw the league’s academic awards program.
Prior to joining the MW, Melcher worked for nine years at the Ohio Valley Conference, the last four as the league’s Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations. Her primary duties at the OVC included oversight of the media relations activities for all 18 of the league’s championship sports, with specific duties in football, men’s basketball and baseball. In addition to serving as the media coordinator for the OVC baseball and basketball tournaments, Melcher was the media coordinator for the 2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball First and Second Round Tournament in Nashville. Before her time at the OVC, Melcher spent three years working as a volunteer and graduate assistant in the Wichita State University Athletics Sports Information Office.
Throughout her 30 years in collegiate athletics, Melcher has also been involved at the national level, serving as a timeout coordinator for the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments and assisting with the media operations at the men’s Final Four. She previously held memberships in the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) while also serving a three-year stint on the NCAA Statistics Advisory Committee.
A native of Newton, Kan., Melcher holds a Bachelor’s degree in finance and a Master’s degree in sports administration from Wichita State University.
