Gary Walenga joined the Mountain West Conference on September 1, 2007, and was promoted into his current role as Chief Financial Officer in July 2015. In his role, Walenga oversees all of the MW’s budgeting, financial and human resources activities. In addition, he continues to serve as the ticket manager for the MW Basketball Championships and any NCAA basketball tournaments hosted by the Mountain West in Denver.

Walenga assumed his role as Director of Special Projects in July 2010. Prior to changing roles, he served a three-year stint as the MW’s Assistant Director of Compliance, where he assisted in all areas of compliance for the MW. His duties included certification of coaches; processing incidental expense waivers, providing legislative updates, managing the Conference’s National Letter of Intent program, and serving as the primary point of contact for interpretative support to the member institutions, as well as a liaison to the MW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

A native of Chantilly, Virginia, Walenga is a 2004 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Virginia Tech, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in finance with a concentration in accounting and a minor in global business. He received his Master of Business Administration with a concentration in sports business from San Diego State University in May 2007. While at San Diego State, Walenga worked as an eligibility intern in the compliance office, specifically focusing on the university’s NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR).

Walenga now resides in Colorado Springs with his wife, Allison, who is also a graduate of Virginia Tech, and their sons Landon and Luke.
