COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State University football student-athlete Xavier Hamlett has been named the Credit Union 1 Community Champion, recognizing his exceptional dedication to civic engagement, leadership, and service throughout the San Diego region.
Hamlett, a senior from San Diego, Calif., has made an even greater impact off the field through a series of community-driven initiatives that have uplifted underserved populations and inspired fellow student-athletes to get involved.
Among his many contributions:
- Launched a successful GoFundMe campaign to support the unhoused community, raising over $3,000 and organizing a downtown donation event that provided food, clothing, haircuts, and sleeping bags.
- Partnered with local businesses such as Tony’s Pepperoni Pizzeria and SimplyG Meals to expand outreach and maximize impact.
- Served as a mentor in SDSU’s Athlete Academy, guest lecturer in Aztecs Going Pro classes, and spoke at local schools to inspire youth through his story of perseverance and service.
- Helped organize a Back-to-School event benefiting The Monarch School, raising over $13,000 and securing donations, including scooters from Segway, for students experiencing homelessness.
- Hosted multiple block parties for the unhoused, engaging over 80 SDSU student-athletes in music, games, and fellowship.
Hamlett was named to the Mountain West All-Community Service Team (2024–2025) and honored as the 2025 Aztec All–Aztecs Going Pro Recipient, underscoring his commitment to personal growth, career development, and community impact.
“Xavier’s leadership and compassion have made a lasting difference in the San Diego community,” said Sam Hamilton, CU1 VP Community Relations. “He embodies the values of service, teamwork, and social responsibility that this award celebrates.”
The Credit Union 1 Community Champion Award is presented quarterly during the 2025-26 academic year and recognizes student-athletes who exceed expectations in their efforts to serve others, foster meaningful partnerships, and drive positive change. Xavier Hamlett’s work stands as a model for what it means to be a leader both on and off the field.
CU1 will make a $500 donation in Xavier’s name to The Athlete Academy Foundation.
