LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The third-seeded UNLV women’s tennis team advanced to its ninth consecutive semifinal round with a 5-1 win over San Jose State on Thursday at the Mountain West Championship being staged at the Darling Tennis Center.

The Rebels improved to 17-6 overall while the Spartans finished their season at 16-6. Since the event’s inception in 2000, UNLV has reached at least the semifinals every season except for three.

On a gorgeous morning in Southern Nevada, the match started with a tense doubles session. Cindy Hu and Coco Zhao won easily at court two, 6-2, over Duru Durgun and Olaya Bances before the Spartans took the match up top. That set up a showdown at No. 3 where Sofiia Sokolvok and Kaho Oyama outlasted Soleded Fayos and Emma Fantousis, 7-6 (7-3), to take the point.

The Rebels used the momentum to take five of six first-sets in singles play. Oyama was the first off the court with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Fayos at No. 5. Nikol Mircheva downed Bances, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4; Sokolvok got by Fantousis, 6-1, 7-6 (3), at No. 6; and Veronika Kliuch closed out Durgun, 6-4, 6-4, on court two.

UP NEXT: UNLV takes on Air Force in Friday’s semifinals starting with doubles play at 11 a.m. The Falcons, seeded seventh, stunned second-seeded UNR today, 4-1, to advance. The Rebels won 4-0 during the regular-season meeting in Las Vegas back on March 16.
