ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico plated seven runs in the opening frame and never looked back en route to its second run-rule victory in a row over Texas Tech in midweek action Tuesday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field, dispatching the Red Raiders 15-5 in eight innings after a double from Will Asby yielded the requisite runs in the bottom of the frame to end things early.

With the win, the Lobos (17-15, 6-6 MW) have now defeated Texas Tech in each of the last four seasons. They’ve won the last two games against TTU by run rule – blowing the Red Raiders out 17-3 in seven innings in Lubbock in their previous meeting last April – and have outscored them 32-8 in those two games combined.

Tye Wood reached base six times without being retired to lead a 16-hit outing for the Lobos in their return to the mountains, going 3-for-3 with three walks to go with four runs scored and three more driven in. The senior switch-hitter picked up hits from both sides of the plate in the first inning alone – the first UNM player to get a hit both left-handed and right-handed in the same game since Mitch Haggerty against Fresno State on April 12, 2013. He finished a triple shy of the cycle after drawing a walk in each of his final three plate appearances.

Karsen Waslefsky also had himself a career day, going 4-for-4 with a walk while scoring three runs and adding one RBI. Will Asby (2-for-4, BB, HR, 2B, 4 RBI, 1 R) doubled and homered while drawing a pair of walks, Jordy Oriach (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) mashed his league-leading 11th home run of the season and Ethan Ott (2-for-4, BB, 2B, 1 RBI, 1 R) laced his 10th double of the year to make it five Lobos with multiple hits.

Starting on the bump on Tuesday for the second week in a row since working his way back from tommy john surgery over the offseason, redshirt freshman RHP Cristian Mogen (2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K) turned in a strong outing to earn his first win of the season, retiring nine of the ten batters he faced.

LHP Matt Romero (2.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K) ran into traffic in the middle innings but managed to limit the damage with timely ground balls, while RHP Brian McBroom (1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K) was efficient in relief, retiring four of the five batters he faced to keep the Lobos in the driver’s seat.

Junior RHP Ben Baker-Livingston (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K) took over next in his first game back from injury after being sidelined over 12 months, allowing a run on a sac fly and a base hit before inducing a pair of flyouts to keep things moving. True freshman RHP Grant Origer (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) made his collegiate debut in the eighth, ending the frame with his first career strikeout.
