FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team split a doubleheader with the BYU Cougars on Saturday at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
The Diamond ‘Dogs started the afternoon with a 13-4 win over BYU before falling 7-1 in game two.
Fresno State sits at 2-1 on the season while BYU advances to 1-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Fresno State 13, BYU 4
BYU started off with a quiet first inning as their batters struggled against Aidan Cremarosa who struck out the side. Fresno State came out swinging in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs fueled by a Justin Stransky RBI single and a two-RBI hit from Jacob Pappas.
BYU got on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run by Cooper Vest. The Bulldogs quickly countered with two runs, including a wild pitch that allowed Pappas to score.
BYU added another run with an RBI double in the fifth inning. Fresno State responded with two more runs, including a two-RBI single by Sky Collins, extending their lead to 10-2.
Murf Gray crushed his first home run of the season in the sixth inning, a two-run shot that gave the Bulldogs a commanding 12-2 lead.
Back-to-back RBI singles from the Cougars gave BYU some life in the seventh inning, but Eddie Saldivar responded with an RBI single that drove in Lee Trevino for the ‘Dogs final run.
Game 2: BYU 7, Fresno State 1
Fresno State struck first with an RBI double by Bobby Blandford, driving in Eddie Saldivar for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
BYU responded with two runs and Fresno State went three-up, three-down in the second, leaving BYU up 2-1. BYU extended their lead with a two-RBI single in the third.
BYU put the game away in the ninth inning with two insurance runs. The Cougars retired the side to secure a 7-1 victory over the Bulldogs.
NOTES:
- Jacob Pappas made his Bulldog debut today as the starting left fielder for Fresno State. He went 4-for-4 with a double and a stolen base in his first game in a Bulldog uniform.
- Murf Gray crushed the Bulldogs’ first home run of the season over the left field wall.
- Starting pitcher Aidan Cremarosa earned the win on the mound in the first game for the ‘Dogs with nine strikeouts in six innings.
