Colorado Springs, Colo. – New Mexico’s Habtom Samuel and Pamela Kosgei have been named the Mountain West Men’s and Women’s Track Athletes of the Week, respectively, after record-setting performances, while Kosgei and fellow Lobo first-year runner Collins Kiprotich both earned a second consecutive MW Freshman of the Week honors.
Wyoming’s Daniel Reynolds was named the MW Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for a second straight week and third time overall this season and Colorado State’s Mya Lesnar picked up the MW Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE THE WEEK
HABTOM SAMUEL, NEW MEXICO
Sophomore, Keren, Eritrea/Al Selef Al Salih
- In his first 5,000 meter race of the season, set a Mountain West track & field record with a time of 13:04.92, improving his own Lobo indoor program record by 9.93 seconds.
- The time moved him from No. 15 to No. 4 on the NCAA All-Time List and ranks first among current D1-athletes.
- Fastest 5k performance by any Mountain West athlete across cross country, indoor and outdoor track.
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
DANIEL REYNOLDS, WYOMING
Senior, Granby, Colorado/Chadron State
- For the third time this season broke his own program and Mountain West record in the weight throw at the Colorado Invitational.
- Won the event with a throw of 24.31m (70′ 9.25″), which is the No. 2 mark in the NCAA this season and the No. 11 mark in the NCAA all-time.
MEN’S FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
COLLINS KIPROTICH, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Eldoret, Kenya/M.O.I. Secondary School Chuiyat
- Recorded a personal-best time of 7:46.90 in the 3,000 meter at the BU Terrier Classic, finishing as the second-fastest collegian in the field.
- The time was the second-fastest in the event in UNM program history and is the fastest in Mountain West this year.
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE & FRESHMAN OF THE WEEKc
PAMELA KOSGEI, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya/St. Agatha Mokpo Girls School
- Won the 3,000 meter race at the UW Invitational, breaking her third UNM program indoor record in as many races and setting the Mountain West indoor record in the event.
- Recorded a time of 8:44.62, good for No. 7 all-time on the NCAA all-conditions list.
- Finished 15.82 seconds ahead of the runner-up and took more than nine seconds off Weini Kelati’s record that was set in 2019.
WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
MYA LESNAR, COLORADO STATE
Senior, Alexandria, Minnesota/Arizona State
- Won the shot put at the New Mexico Team Open, her first event of the season.
- Threw 18.81m/61-8.5, putting her atop of the national leaderboard by 8.5-inches.
