BOISE, Idaho – Boise State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dirk Koetter has been named a semifinalist for the Broyles Award, presented annually to the nation’s top assistant coach.
The Broncos ranks third in the nation with 40.6 points per game, the team’s highest average since 2011. They are also third-nationally in turnovers lost (8). Boise State has 3,042 rushing yards, fifth-most in the country this season and most in the program’s FBS era (since 1996). The offense has a 50.0 percent success rate on 3rd downs, ranking sixth in the FBS.
Running back Ashton Jeanty leads the nation with 2,390 all-purpose yards and 29 total touchdowns. He has 2,288 rushing yards, the fifth-highest single-season total in FBS history. The HEI2MAN candidate is a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, Maxwell Award and Doak Walker Award.
Quarterback Maddux Madsen leads the Mountain West in touchdown passes (21) and ranks second in the conference in passing efficiency (144.9). His 7:1 TD:INT ratio is the best in the country among quarterbacks with 20+ touchdowns and is the highest in the MW since 2004, when Alex Smith had an 8:1 ratio for Utah.
The Broncos allow 0.92 sacks per game, the seventh-fewest in the country. Kage Casey is the second-highest graded left tackle in the country according to Pro Football Focus, earning a grade of 90.0. He has played a team-high 802 offensive snaps and hasn’t allowed any sacks.
Matt Lauter leads conference tight ends in receptions (38), yards (461) and touchdowns (6). He is the first Boise State tight end to eclipse 450 receiving yards since 2001, when Jeb Putzier had 842. The Broncos’ leading receiver is Cameron Camper, who has 51 catches for 811 yards and four touchdowns. Twelve of his receptions have gone for 20+ yards, with four of those gaining 30+.
Koetter was the Boise State head coach from 1998-00, winning two Big West Conference championships and Coach of the Year honors twice. He spent time at Arizona State, leading the Sun Devils to four bowl appearances in six seasons. The Pocatello, Idaho native was an NFL offensive coordinator from 2007-15 before being hired as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2022, he was the interim offensive coordinator for Boise State, leading the team to a win in the Frisco Bowl.
No. 11/10/10 Boise State will host No. 22/19/19 UNLV in the 2024 Old Trapper Mountain West Championship at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6. The game will be televised on FOX. The network’s Big Noon Kickoff crew will broadcast a pregame show on The Blue, beginning at 5 p.m.
