BOISE, Idaho – Boise State junior Ashton Jeanty has been named a finalist for three national awards, ESPN announced. The HEI2MAN candidate is eligible for the Doak Walker Award (premier running back), Maxwell Award (player of the year) and Walter Camp Award (most outstanding player).
Jeanty ranks first in the country in nearly every rushing category, including attempts (275), yards (2,062) and touchdowns (27). He has 1,512 yards after contact, which is higher than the total rushing yards number of any FBS player. He has also forced 118 missed tackles, the most in a season during the College Football Playoff era (since 2014). He has gained a nation-best 98 first downs and boasts a PFF rushing grade of 96.9, almost four points higher than the next-closest player.
His 27 rushing touchdowns are equal to or more than the number of rushing touchdowns for 118 FBS teams and his 2,062 rushing yards are more than the total of 103 FBS programs. Jeanty has more total touchdowns (28) than 18 teams and more points (168) than three teams. The junior has nine touchdowns of 50+ yards, with the next-closest FBS player having four. He has seven touchdowns of 60+ yards, tied for the most in a season since 2000.
The Lone Star (Texas) HS product has more rushes of 20+ yards (21) than rushes for loss (19) this season. He leads the nation in fourth quarter rushing yards (601) and touchdowns (9) despite sitting the second half of two games. He is one of four players since 1956 to run for 2,000 yards and 25 touchdowns in 11 games, joining Barry Sanders (Oklahoma State, 1988), Ricky Williams (Texas, 1998) and Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin, 2014).
The Boise State captain is the first player since 1996 to eclipse 125 rushing yards in his first 11 games and has set the Mountain West record for consecutive 100-yard games (11). He has three 200-yard, three-touchdown games, tied for third in FBS history since 1996. Jeanty has six games with three or more rushing touchdowns, also tied for third in FBS history.
Jeanty has recorded these historic numbers despite frequently facing a loaded box. He has 1,631 yards against 7+ man boxes, over 500 yards more than any other running back. Against 9-man boxes, he has scored 14 touchdowns on 43 carries. He has been consistent for all 60 minutes, averaging 102.4 yards per first half played and 104.0 yards per second half played. He has rushed for over 100 yards in 14 of the 20 halves he has played this season.
This season, Jeanty has set the Boise State single-season records for rushing yards (2,062), 200-yard games (4) and 100-yard games (11). He currently averages program single-season records in all-purpose yards per game (196.7), rushing yards per game (187.5) and rushing yards per carry (7.50). He also holds the school single-game rushing records for yards (267) and touchdowns (6).
Jeanty is a four-time Doak Walker National Running Back of the Week and six-time MW Offensive Player of the Week. He earned midseason All-America selection from various national outlets, including unanimous nods from the Associated Press and CBS Sports.
The recipient of the 35th Doak Walker Award, 88th Maxwell Award and 58th Walter Camp Award will be announced on Dec. 12 at the Home Depot College Football Awards. The show will be televised live on ESPN.
